A Neck Ruff

Lawrence Washington, His Neck-Ruff

A neck-ruff can take up to 17 yards of material, this one is only using seven. Even so it took the best part of twelve hours to make, a further two to wash, starch and set.

As you can see, using period materials and techniques, it is extremely difficult to get the fine regular curves you see in the paintings, not bad though for Jon's first attempt.

This particular ruff used pins rather than beeswax to secure the folds.
