One of the suits that is worn by Lawrence is a black silk damask with a matching hat.
In the period the material for such a suit would cost around £12-20 (about 18-30 months wages for a tailor), therefore it would not be worn on a day to day basis by the middle classes unless they had ambition, which of course Lawrence has.
