Interior ScenesThe Tudor Group do not like setting up a tented encampment as we point out that the Elizabethans did not live in tents. If we are portraying households we prefer to work inside buildings. If we have to be outside then we do domestic work related to those environments - coppicing, laundry, animal husbandry, tannery, markets, past times etc. Most domestic interiors require some work when we arrive. Some furniture is orginal and therefore not necessarilly condusive to being used. Some sites have information boards or signs that cannot be removed, so we have a large amount of painted hangings that we cover such anachronisms with. To disguise modern items is impractical at some sites - national museums for instance. At these sites we work with the sponsor to ensure the scene is set for the public; reminding them that we are not re-enacting; we are interpreting aspects of the period so we do not pretend things are correct and are happy to accept a modern context if no alternative presents itself. |
