The Cook and His Mate

The Cook and His Mate

Mark and Jon worked the Galley for four days. As well as interpreting for the visiting public they were also attempting to quantify the effort; fuel and time needed to prepare food for the officers and men of the Mary Rose.

While the budget could not run into cooking for hundreds (and we would would not have wanted to waste such food); we did prepare quantities of roasted and boiled meats; pottages; frummetys; bread and biscuit. It is no holiday working with such equipment; however when the firebox is up to temperature it really just runs itself and all you do is feed wood in; manage the air flow and take care of the cooking.

Baking however is another issue. It is quite possible to bake bread while still cooking other foods. But without experience it is also very easy to burn any bakes.
