Artists workshops encompassed many crafts. Pigments - bought in their raw state - would require preperation and combining to make the paint, canvasses and wooden objects would require surface preperation before painting began and brushes of varying quality would be hand made. In the 16th century people decorated many domestic items such as boxes, canvass hangings, wooden screens, miniatures and playing cards.
